I believe it is safe to say that at some point or another, we have all been at a time in our lives where the days become too overwhelming and we feel like everything is out of our control. Our nutrition and exercise can go out the window if our mind isn’t healthy. As someone who struggled with generalized anxiety with frequent panic attacks, I was silent about it until very recently. I put my all into situations so that 99% of people in my life did not know the torment that went on in my mind, the moments leading up to a social event, a phone call or even a simple trip to the grocery store.
It was not until I took the time to focus on me and become connected with my mind and spirit that I started to feel grounded and strong. Once I began to take my self-care very seriously to the point that it was and still is a priority in my day, is when I noticed the true magic. Of course, I have my days that are bad and it is usually when I let life take over and forget to take even just a few minutes to myself- but I now know what fills me up. On those days I just take extra care of myself. I meditate, I diffuse oils, I take an Epsom salt bath, I read a book, I write in my journal; unlike in the past where I would just try to sleep it off or pour a glass of wine which did nothing for my soul.
This is what holistic wellness is all about. It is not a fad. It is not a quick fix. It is not a diet or fitness challenge that will have you slipping back into old ways once you reach your goals. It is a journey to finding a balance within yourself that leads to a complete lifestyle change. Eating whole foods, exercising regularly and slowing down life even for a moment. As a pediatric critical care nurse, this is one of my favorite components of the program because food truly is medicine and in our current society- it is usually one of the last changes to be made as adults.
